Hunt, a Civil war veteran, who died in 1887. cnapei, szoo uroaaway. thru use of mechanical devices that would reduce employes to a fifth of the normal number required. Started At $4 A Month Saunders began his grocery store career in his boyhood as a $4 a month clerk. He observed later, "When I start anything, I Stick to it." Within 20 years he was a rich man, having revolutionized the grocery business with his 2,400 Piggly Wiggly stores which were the beginning of today's supermarkets.

A few years later, in 1923, his fortune was wiped out in his; spectacular battle against a Wall street "bear raid" on the stock of the Piggly Wiggly Stores, Inc. The stock, which Saunders had "cornered," tumbled and caused his defeat when the New York Stock Exchange granted five days for delivery of orders instead of the usual 24 hours. Makes a Comeback Saunders lost the grocery chain as a result of the Wall street scramble but he bounced back. He borrowed $12,000 and launched the Clarence Saunders Sole Owner of My Name chain ef so-called as a result of litigation with Piggly Wiggly over the contention the Saunders name was a trademark, synonymous with Piggly Wiggly. The new chain went well for awhile and his stores dotted the country, then Saunders had difficulties with his backers and the 700 store corporation went into bankruptcy in 1931.

Four years later Saunders, asserting "I'm not licked yet," began playing with the Idea of a mechanical grocery. He tried three times with an automatic system called keedoozle and failed, apparently because it was too complicated and housewives wore too inept mechanically. Built Two Mansions In his days of triumph, Saunders spent 2 million on. houses, putting up two mansions which are now Memphis landmarks. Memphis was the starting point all of his store ventures.

His first house, a granite structure which boasted the city's first swimming pool, is now the University club. The second, in which he never spent a single night. Is the imposing "pink palace which he called Cla-Le-Clare for his three children, Clay, Lee, and Clare. This house, made of pink stone from Georgia, is now a museum. The fact that he made and lost millions was only a minor irritation to Saunders later in life.

He never qui! trying and always predicted. "I'll be back in the million dollar class within a He was married twice. His first union, to which were born three children, lasted 25 years but ended in divorce in 1928. Six weeks later Saunders was married in Chicago to Patricia Houston, who was -divorced from Francis Bamberg. A daughter was born to this union.

at chapel, 3021 Law BEINERT Virginia Ann Relnert. 6V1 years old, Oct. 14. at Michigan City, formerly of Chicago, daughter of Lerory Relnert and Caroline Curtis Reinert, sis tax of 3 cents a package on cigarets purchased by Illinois residents outside the state was filed yesterday in Superior court. The plaintif, Mrs.

Lillian Goldstein, 8925 S. Jeff ery described as a housewife, and acting on behalf of all Illinois purchasers of cigarets outside the state, was represented by Atty. Albert J. Meserow. He was the attorney for plaintifs in an unsuccessful suit challenging validity of the law.

Mrs. Goldstein asked a declaratory judgment holding the 1951 law invalid. The suit contended the law is unconstitutional because it failed to specify that one-third of the revenue shall be used to retire soldiers' bonus bonds, as is the case in taxes collected on sales of cigarets in Illinois. The suit also alleged discrimination in that dealers get a 5 per cent discount on' the tax stamps to cover costs of affixing them, while individuals purchasing cigarets out of state do not BEER DRINKING CUT OFF; SUES TOWN OFFICERS Adel, Oct. 14 (A-; An Adel "man went to court today because he claims tavern operators here will not sell him beer to relieve his "exhausted and dehydrated condition." Ivan Gowin filed a $25,000 damage suit against Adel city officials, claiming they have put him on a so-called blacklist, preventing him from buying beer.

This, his petition said, has resulted in his being "shunned, scorned, and humiliated." He said he likes to drink beer moderately. Gowin, father of four, related that in 1950 he set off a dynamite charge at the United Brick and Tile company, where he worked, in order to call attention to a labor dispute. For this he served 10 months in prison. Last July, he said, he was arrested for. intoxication and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

After that, his petition said, city officials added his name to a list of persons to whom taverns are not permitted to sell beer. Marine Listed as POW WE1HER William Weiher of 5226 6.
