Officials at the Pal-Waukee airport near Wheeling studied lists of former flying students yesterday in an effort to identify a pudgy, dark haired young man who stole an airplane Saturday evening, crash landed on a concrete highway 8 miles south of Kewaunee. and disappeared after hitchhiking into Manitowoc. The search turned to Alpena. because the pilot told a Wisconsin assemblyman that he was going there to see a sweetheart. Familiar With Field Jack Bryan, manager of the Pal-Waukee airport, said there had been no recent flights to or from Alpena.

He said he believed that the missing man had taken flight training at Pal-Waukee. was familiar with the field and the two-seater Ercoupe plane, and had gone there intending to take off hurriedly. He was dressed in brown coveralls, resembling army surplus garments used by many student pilots. After the cross-wind take-off, the plane was pursued but not spotted by W. E.

Heller, a flight instructor, and a squadron from the Glenview Naval Air station. The plane was owned by the Pascal Rent-a-Plane system and had been parked near the Pascal hangar. Fuel For 300 Mile Flight The plane, which carried enough fuel for a 300 mile flight, was next seen over the Manitowoc county airport. State Assemblyman and Mrs. Otto Vogel of Manitowoc.

found the plane wrecked, in a roadside ditch. Cars kept getting in my way. but I missed them," the pilot told the Vogels. saying he had run out of gas and tried to land on the paved slab. He was bleeding from a forehead cut and wiping the plane's controls when they drove up.

The man, given a ride to Manitowoc, told the Vogels that he had better telephone a friend "Al" in- Chicago. He said he was attempting to find a "short cut" across Lake Michigan to see a girl in Alpena, but would catch a car ferry from Manitowoc to Manistee, Mich. Plane's Kev Thrown Away After the stranger had thanked Vogel and dashed into a hotel in Manitowoc. Vogel noticed the plane's ignition key in the gutter. Vogel ran after the man, who apparently had slipped out of a coffee shop door to disappear.

Sheriff Arthur Truttschel of Manitowoc sent deputies to the ferry docks, but found no trace of the missing flyer. They searched a movie theater, after getting a tip that the man had gone there. We couldn't find any fingerprints in the plane," the sheriff said. POWERFUL RIVER TUG PUT ON DISPLAY AT MICHIGAN AV. Fu-Mrml Tuaadae. at 9: 15 from funeral tCSDCP List 4 Millionaires on Hong Kong Liner MACAO, JuLr 25 (AP)-A plot to kidnap foir millionaire passengers may tiave been responsible for the crash of an air liner with 25 deaths, the police commissioner of this Portuguese colony declared today. One of the victims carried a huge sum of cash, he said. The Cathay Pacific line's flying boat, en route from Macao to the near-by British colony of Hong Kong, crashed into the sea four miles from Macao July 16.

Seven of the dead were Americans. Wreckage To Be Raised Police Commissioner L. A. M. Paletti declined in an interview to identify the millionaL-es, but said: "We have a few small indications pointing to piracy.

When we raise the rest of the wreckage we may find more evidence to confront one suspect we already are holding." He declined to identify the suspect. He said five men were involved in the plot and that he "had reason to believe" one of them was a Chinese pilot who was killed in the crash. This man. he said, apparently was to fly the plane after the pirates took it over. Victim Carried $500,000 Instead, something went wrong and the plane crashed.

The. lone survivor said there appeared to be an explosion in one of the four engines. The American dead included the pilot, a missionary family of four, and an oil company employe and his wife. Commissioner Paletti said the widow of one victim told him her husband was carrying $500,000 in cash, but did not say what kind of dollars. (Hong Kong dollars in that amount would be worth about $125,000 and would be the most likely currency; $500,000 in Chinese money would be worth about 7 cents.) Elliott 'and Altergott had lived together for nearly four years, recently at 157 W. Elm st. Elliott was bound in a chair and shot thru the head with a .45 caliber pistol. Altergott then went to the Tip Top Tap of the Allerton, a spot which he and Elliott often visited, friends said, and ordered one drink. Before he could be stopped he crawled onto the ledge and jumped, landing in a parking lot 23 stories below. Prior to committing suicide, he called his sister. Mrs.
