Public health officials said today that 2,753 cases were reported thru Aug. 7, compared with In the same period of last year and 3,430 in the similar period of 1934. McMTLLAN David Edward SfcaCiCaa.

Five new cases of infantile paralysis in Cook county outside Chicago yesterday brought the total since July 30 to 26, of which five have been fatal. In Chicago, the health department reported only one new case, but said seven persons were being examined as possible victims. Pisano, 23 months old, APHIS, or plant lice, are infesting tomato and sweet corn plants In many gardens now. In most gardens in which plant lice are troublesome, ants also will be noticed since the lice often are carried to vegetable plants by ants. The ants themselves are not damaging, but gardeners who control ant populations will find that the lice will disappear. A good plan is to find the ant hills and destroy them by the use of cyanide products or carbon disul-phide. Cyanide insecticides are available in seed and hardware stores and carbon disulphide can be bought from druggists.

A parallel campaign against the plant aphis can be started by the use of nicotine sulphate spray, available in commercial form from hardware stores. Gardeners who usa nicotine sulphate sprays against plant aphis on tomato vines -should be certain to wash the fruits carefully before serving. 11. 1943. of 6600 S.

Only In a silo can soft corn be utilized. A fully matured kernel will contain approximately 20 per cent water. If it contains 25 per cent or more it is considered soft and needs special precautions in storage. When soft corn Is ensiled it does not need any additional preservative to make good silage. It should be chopped finely, the pieces not more than one inch, across.

The silage should be tramped firmly and water added until each 100 pounds contains around 60 pounds of water. Building Trench Silo. If farmers already have stored alfalfa or other legumes in their silos they must find something else to hold the soft corn. The best solution is a trench silo. For all practical purposes it answers the same purpose as the standard cylinder type silo.

Trench silos can be dug in any handy spot. They usually are 12 feet wide at the top, 10 feet at the bottom, and about 8 feet deep. The length will vary according to the desired capacity. They seldom are less than 60 feet and frequently are more than 100 feet long. When the silo Is filled the silage er of Mrs.

Considering the late date at which the grain was planted, it has done exceptionally welL Growing weather has been perfect altho the farm could use some rain. Hot dry days have helped immensely to rush the crop to maturity.

The fields that went in last will not make field corn even if frost does hold off a few weeks later than Oct. 19, which is the average date cf the first frost The fields are far behind and are just beginning to tasseL This is not worrying the men, however, because this corn is destined for the silos and need not reach the flinty maturity of corn saved for ear feeding. Early Frost Problem. If the frost comes early and catches the other fields while the ears still are in the milk, the farm will have to salvage all of the crop thru the silos.
