PART 7-PAGE JIG. CHICAGO SUNDAY TRIBUNE: APRIL 3, 1960 JJ LATER and MAN AN Was My Face Red as 1 Got the Picture SLATER CLASSIC 4 MY WIFE is a camera fiend, but all I know about picture taking is how to carry her three cameras, tripod, flash bulbs, films, and all her other paraphernalia when we take walks in the park and go on vacations. Recently we took a bus trip thru Utah and Arizona. Many of the people on the tour also were shutterbugs, so I was in the minority. Whenever the bus stopped at the request of one of the "bugs" usually my wife, I would tell them all that they were wasting time that they could buy much better pictures on post cards at the next souvenir stand.

We had lots of fun with all my kidding and their humorous retorts. The last day of the trip, the photographers decided on one of the stops that each would take a picture of the entire group. When it was my wife's turn, someone suggested that I take "the picture so she would be in it. She set the camera, adjusted it, and explained that all I had to do was press a certain button when the group was ready. I did just as she asked.

The next Christmas I learned why I had been selected to take that final picture. Cards arrived from all our friends on the bus and inclosed in each was a picture of me taking the picture! Gilbert J. MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY APRIL 4-9 NO LULLABY was ever sung to me by my mother. No curls on my head were ever lovingly made around her finger. No dresses were ever stitched up by her. There was no admonition to "stand still" while she took a skirt length. No heart to heart talks were ever held between us.

But my life has been guided by her, and perhaps I have appreciated her more than Brand New -i i IMUill SAVE Electric Miss Donna Marie Owens is employed by the same company as her fiance, Reduced John J. Browner. They plan to be wed in October. Miss Owens is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Browner of Phoenix, Ariz. The wedding will take place Oct 15 in St. Gertrude's church. if I had known all of the intimate little things that transpire between a mother and daughter. My preacher daddy often talked with me about my mother and the day she gave birth to me.

He had gone to the church yard next door and had joyfully rung the bell to tell the parishioners a new baby had come to the young minister's household. And then, a few brief days she quietly said to him, 'Take care of my baby girl and teach her to be the kind of woman I would want her to be." These were her last words, and my father went back to the church yard to ring the bell which would call the neighbors to help him. Now I am a grandmother four times. Still I hear those words of my mother, Teach her to be the kind of woman I would want her to be." I heard them as I went thru elementary I heard them when I went away to college. I heard them when I married and had my first baby a girl I prayed that I might have the wisdom to teach her to be the kind of woman my mother wanted me to be, and I thank God that she is.

I heard those words thru all the highlights and deep shadows of my life. They have stilled my tongue when it would have been sharp. They have guided me into fields of service in my community and church. These words have been a "lamp unto my feet and a light unto my pathway for more than half a century. As I survey all of life, both past and present, I thank God for so great a heritage from such a wonderful mother.
