It would affect in only a slight way healthy tissue where cells are relatively stable and consequently show less active nucleic acid turnover and lower radiation sensitivity. The division of biology and medicine of the atomic energy commission agreed to finance the project and supply the necessary isotopes. Stable lanthanum lanta-num 139 is being converted into radioactive lanthanum 140 at Oak Ridge and shipped to Montefiore hospital. At peak radioactivity, this isotopa emits very strong beta and gamma rays of over 1,000,000 electron volts. Matching Two Facts Radioactive lanthanum has a half life of only 30 hours, that is, half of its intensity is lost at the end of that period.

Surviving are her husband, Harry, an official of the Arthur N. Dickerson sensitivity to radiation of the cancer cell. Thus far the experiments have been on mice. A specific form of cancer, the Ehrlich ascites tumor, has been used because it infects every time and kills every time. No mice have been cured, but lanthanum has prolonged their life two to three times that of untreated mice.

Dr. Stern said it was not yet clear whether lanthanum had failed to reach some cancerous cells or else had reached all but had left some merely damaged and able eventually to continue their activity. The method of administration most fruitful and least toxic has been directly into one of the body cavities, such as the chest or abdomen, where the cancer is found. Once injected into a specific cavity, it tends to remain there instead of dispersing thruout the body. This distribution characteristic of lanthanum has been found to be substantially the same in humans.

It's a Pinpoint Attack Dr. Stern saw the potential advantage of this treatment over other forms of radioactive treatment. The use of X-rays or radium can be compared to an area bombardment. You let go and hope you hit something, he said. The lanthanum treatment is a direct pinpoint attack which, because of the basic fact of chemical affinity, gets at Just those cells that are giving the most trouble.

There are some important problems to be solved, Dr. Stern continued. The first is that of the whigh toxicity of the lanthanum isotopes the project has been receiving from Oak Ridge. Up to now, when inert lanthanum is bombarded, only one atom in 1 million is rendered radioactive. Because of this disproportion, high toxic doses have had to be administered to get enough radioactivity into the body.

The problem is to increase the percentage of the radioactive lanthanum isotope in each lanthanum preparation. Once radioactive lanthanum is rendered as pure as possible, it can be administered in infinitesimal nontoxic doses because of its extraordinarily high intensity. Carefully controled experiments on humans will be begun soon. 3D POLIO DEATH IN LAKE COUNTY Thursday. July 24, 10 a.
