Rich East, 12; Sandburg, 0. Thus in its first three tests this fall Kich East has scored 46 points while holding opponents scoreless. This is a feat that Coach George Egofske finds particularly rewarding, not so much because he in the highly specialized coaching functions of his three man varsity staff-handles the interior line both on offense and defense, but because Coach Egofske believes that this year's team has at each starting position a potential college player. "I have been at Rich four years," points out the Rich East coach, a 1948 graduate of Thornton Township, and we've had some good teams in football, but this is the best" Clear Sandburg Hurdle Last season, when Egofske moved up to the head post after two years as assistant, the Rockets took second in "the Southwest Suburban conference behind Sandburg. A 12 to 0 loss to Sandburg last fall kept Rich from winning its fifth conference championship.

No similar second place finish Is likely to take place this year, at least not second to Sandburg, in view of last week's 12 to 0 Rich East's hopes to succeed Sandburg as Southwest Suburban league champion this season rest, in part, on Harlan Dodge, guard; Bruce Craddock, center; Gary Heifner, guard; and Gil Hopper, quarterback" and end (left to right). Hopper shares quarterback duties with Monty Hughes. itribune Photo. It aVc victory by Rich over the Orland Park Eagles. However, Egofske explained, Rich has a tough assignment this Saturday at Homewood-Flossmoor, a team that also remains unbeaten after conference games with Reavis and Bremen.

List Other Games The Homewood Flossmoor contest will be followed by meetings with Bremen, at Reavis, at Evergreen Park, and with Lincoln-Way, successively. Coach Egofske's fear of Home-wood -Flossmoor notwithstanding, veteran observers in the Southwest Suburban conference believe that no one is going to stop the Rockets from blasting their way into orbit this year.

In the three games, Rich did not permit Bloom, Oak Lawn, or Sandburg to gain more than 100 yards each. Credit for this superlative defense goes to these big, rugged players: ENDS Gil Hopper, 6-2, 185, who caught a touchdown pass against Sandburg and who plays halfback on defense; Dick Carle, 6-0, 200, a 16 year old senior and a top student who caught a 41 yard pass that set up Rich's first touchdown against Bloom, and who plays inside linebacker on defense; Karl Kuster, 5-11, 175, the only junior in the starting lineup, who plays defensive halfback. Dodge Makes 17 Tackles TACKLES Bill Farrell, 6-1, 210, all-conference selection last year who was voted the outstanding defensive player in the Bloom game; Bob Elliott, 6-2, 190, who plays both ways. GUARDS Harlan Dodge, 5-11, 210, who is in his first year on the varsity squad and who was in on 17 tackles in the Oak Lawn game, and as reward was voted the game's top defensive player; Gary' Heifner, 5-9, 185, who plays corner linebacker. CENTER Bruce Craddock, 5-11, 225, biggest player in the starting lineup who plays guard on defense.

BACKFIELD Bill Bellnap and Monty Hughes alternate at quarterback, Jim Howard plays left halfback on offense and middle linebacker on defense; Jim Hawthorne plays right halfback and safety on defense; Mickey Brown plays fullback and inside linebacker; and Denny Denman alternates at halfback. Tiny Prep Quarterback Coach Sums Up Cross Country Dead Heat Tie Ranks as Mighty Dragon Dave Hawkins may not be the smallest football player in Illinois, but at 5 foot 5 and 130 pounds he must come pretty close to it He sure is the smallest the spotlight This is cross country, which last fall attracted a record number of 170 schools in the 15th annual meet conducted by the Illinois High School association. Glenbard West of Glen Ellyn won last year's state meet, held over the 1.9 mile course at the Urbana Country club, scoring 80 points to New Trier's 85, good for second place, and Plumps .139. Phillips third place finish was the best showing made by a Chicago Public league school. Individual winner was Weymouth Kir kl and of New Trier, who finished first in a field of ISO qualifiers from 50 schools that bad advanced representatives in district trials. It was the second year in a row Kirk-land won.

In 1958, the New Trier harrier took second. Figuring prominently in Glenbard West's team victory were Dave Stineback and Rick Cunningham, who finished 5th and 10th, respectively, in the big field. Other runners on the winning team with Stineback and Cunningham were Paul Vernon, Bill Miilichap, and Jim Isaacson. Isaacson is a senior this year. The other four boys were graduated.

The victory was the first for Glenbard West, which now shares with New Trier, Proviso East, Evanston, and Bloom the distinction of being one of four Chicago area schools ever to finish in front in the LES.A. cross country meet Glenbard West, in its first three dual meets this fall, has beaten Glenbard East, Downers Grove, and La Grange. "And for all I know, Hawkins could be the smallest first string quarterback ever to wear a prep uniform," Burnell added. Its tie was with Marquette U. High, 7 to 7. Hawkins' contribution to his team's success consists of four completions in eight passes, two good for touchdowns, and an average of, 6.5 yards per carry. "He's got to be seen to be believed," said Coach Burnell. I think that for his size Dave is tremendous." Hawkins follows in a succession of St George quarterbacks who ranged from 5-11 and 170 in the case of Glenn Strong in 1959 and 1960 to the 6-3, 205 pound Max Burnell the coach's son, in 1957 and 1958.

If Hawkins and the rest of the St George Dragons stop downstate Lincoln Saturday, and then win from North Chicago, St Patrick, downstate Georgetown, and St Mel in remaining games, Co-Capt. Ru-zicka probably will use his hefty 220 pounds and 6-1 frame to give the mighty little quarterback the loftiest ride of his Tie scores in cross country are so rare that when the West Leyden and Maine West harriers ran a 2Vt to 28Va deadlock last week in their first Interim league dual meet the natural impalse was to ask why. Coach John Loprieno of West Leyden explained the result this way: Tom Somora finished No. 1 for ns, and that gave West Leyden one point A Maine West runner took second, good for two points. "Third place was.

We scored the remaining 24 points oa Dob Loam's 5th place finish, John Nester'i 7th, and Rich Allen's 12th." Cross country rules state that altho a school may eater op to seven runners in a meet only the scores of the first five finishers count.
