Hines, 100, hero of two wars, a former army chief of staff, and the oldest living graduate of the United States Military academy, died at Walter Reed army medical center today. Hospital officials said Hines, who fought the American Indians in the west as a young officer, died a few days after a respiratory infection that developed into pneumonia, he had lived at the hospital since 1966. The tall, gaunt Hines was described on his efficiency report signed by Gen. John J. Nikifor, 78, contracted tuberculosis during the long years he lived in poverty, and spent his last three years in a sanatorium. Once he was a beggar in Krynica, Poland's most-frequented spa, and sold his paintings for mere pittances. About 10 years ago, he was discovered by artists then working in Paris, and his art became recognized at home and abroad.
