Cathleen Nesbitt "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Desiree," and "Affair to Remember" gives an aching portrayal as Harry's arthritic mother who sleeps in a bedroom above the barbershop. Her character was written into the screenplay and it is the one bright addition. Burton has finally found a challenging role and is more than equal to it.

Rex Harrison swishes and preens too much but controls the part as the movie progresses. "Staircase" on film was a risk. So is my recommendation that you see it. 'A! "STAIRCASE" IS the story of two homosexuals. They are middle-aged barbers fighting off baldness and pot bellies.

When they get into bed, it is to go to sleep. They might hug each other, but that isn't shown. There is no question, however, that they hug each other emotionally and that is what the movie is about. In our weeping stint, are we?" If Harry would ever break down and cry, Charlie would probably hide all the handkerchief.

Harry needs the insults because he wants to be punished. When Charlie, late in the film, responds with tenderness, Harry objects. I hate you like this, all subdued and holy. Give me one of your cruel thrusts." When Charlie does, Harry is exuberant. That'i how they sustain each other.

It is uncommon for a playwright to adapt his work for the screen. Charles Dyer wrote the story for the stage about two characters who never left their barbershop. Moreover, it was even questionable if one of the characters was anything more than desperate imagination on the part of the other. But the film studio people who were going to pay for the film believed that a two character story would not be supported at the box office. So Dyer added some outside shots, a gratuitous scene of "normal" sexual relations, and an encounter with a third homosexual.

These changes were compromises, and they probably made neither the writer or producer happy. A two character film could have worked if the director was enterprising. Close-ups, like those used in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," which won an Academy award for photography by Haskell Wexler, would have made this film a success. As it stands, It is a aatifactory film achievement with a very good story. Richard Burton la marvelous In holding up "Staircase." Rex Harrison is more of a broken atep.

We do care about their relationship because it Is so much like so many abnormal normal marriages. Unfortunately the crisis events that happen to the couple are not involving and the dramatic action lags. Harry is worried about his baldness. He keeps bare pate under a towel and thruout the film toys with the idea of either showing his baldness or wearing a wig. Charlie, who was once married and may have fathered a child, has been arrested for impersonating a female and is scared about his impending trial Ha has been in one television commercial and is afraid the publicity will ruin his nonexistent career.

That's all the drama In the story, unless you think that one of them, more likely Harry, Is going to apply a razor blade to his wrists. One performance, In addition to Burton's, deserves special Sir Michael Redgrave Se. Michigan SUBURBAN MOUTH WIST Panaviaionand Matrocolor WORLD Zn 410 1 1 141 A.M.
