The actual sculpture of Gaudier -Brzeska is included in this final tribute as Russell's camera moves in, among, and around the work, much of which has been placed on revolving pedestals. The visual effect of a camera moving against a rotating object is to multiply the energy of both the sculpture and the scene. Russell's camera, if you will, is sculpting the air space between Gaudier-Brzeska's fine creations. Additionally, "Savage Messiah" has something to say about the act of creation. We never get much background information on Henri's earlier life.

We are forced to accept him as artist and presume that he does what he does because he cannot do otherwise. In contrast to Sophie, who may be as bright but is much more hung-up, Henri's power is generated by his ability to know what he is feeling and verbalize or carve it. He can. say to Sophie before knowing her, "I'm lonely. Are you lonely?" At this point we know that Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was a special human being, that his death was more of a loss to the people who knew him and his work than it was himself.

He had been alive, and he enjoyed it. ACROSS 110th Street, 'at the Woods Theater, isn't bashful about its desire to play up to racial tension. Italian mob members scream obscenities at black racketeers, and the blacks return the insults. The shouting is about three Harlem blacks who steal $300,000 of the mob's haul from the numbers racket. A small gang war plays itself out as white and black Harlem detectives Anthony Quinn and Yaphet Kot-to battle each other while attempting to stop the killing.

The film breaks no new ground, remaining content to combine familiar elements from "In The Heat of the Night" modern last Feature 1020 p.m. "The Music Lovers," "The Devils," "The Boy "Savage Messiah" is impudent, bold, and enthusiastically alive. Russell is a special director because he takes unusual subjects and makes them conventionally entertaining. "Savage Messiah," for me, is more about the passionate act of artistic creation than Gaudier-Brze ska's strange love affair. The love affair is simply the story peg.

Sophie Brzeska, a troubled, always agitated Polish woman in her forties, is in Paris writing "a novel of the spirit," modestly titled "Truth." She becomes entangled in Henri's force field when he stands in a public fountain and says, "I know you're a genius, be cause I am a genius. Let's live together." And they do, thru thin and thinner in a cold water flat above a railroad station, as Henri battles the faddist art words of Paris and London. But they never make physical love. It frightens Sophie, and that frustrates Henri. He relieves himself with other women, causing occasional splits with Sophie.

Those developments, of course, are standard biographical melodrama, even when well performed by English stage actress Dorothy Tutin as Sophie and Scott Antony making an impressive film debut as Henri What distinguishes "Savage Messiah" are scenes in which we watch Henri' sculpt under extreme pressure, look at a marble quarry as just so many potential sculptures, and, COLUMBIA PICTURES Present BERNARD VERLEY Z0UZ0U Hill I BV tnlO sretotfro cptnthHOttl Gh foe in the Cifternoon Film FtUivtt.
