Mr. Oates was raised in Evanston, 111., and attended Princeton University where he received his undergraduate degree in 1926 and a doctorate in 931. He stayed on to teach classics at Princeton for more than SO years. His scholarly works include writings on Greek drama, the Epicurean philosophers, and St. Augustine.

He was coauthor of "The Complete Greek Drama" with Eugene O'Neill. While at Princeton, he was elected national president of Phi Beta Kappa.
