a war hero Mortimer Wheeler, 85, archeology pioneer, dies LONDON Mortimer Wheelit Scotsman who pioneered modern scientific archeology and who once said "I want to live to 90 or die in the attempt." died Thursday at 85 at the home of a friend. Wheeler was a hero of two wars, was twice British television personality of the year. and some of his colleagues were so irked by his style and charisma that they called him Flash Harry. Just about everyone in Britain knew him from his frequent television appearances. He helped popularize what became known as "the weekend dig" in witch ordinary people volunteered to by in archeological excavation.

ON TELEVISION, he was a star of the "Animal, Vegetable, or program in which a panel of experts had to identify objects presented to them. Wheeler was a handsome man, with twinkling eyes, wavy hair, and a bristling military-style moustache. He married three times but had lived apart from his third wife for years. He had one son by his first wife. BORN IN 1890, the son of a journalist, he served with distinction in the British Army in World War I and World War II, earning among other awards the Military Cross.

Although years over age, he fought in World War II as a brigadier in the 8th Army from El Alamein to Tunis and on to the Salerno landing. He earned degrees of master of arts and doctor of literature at London University in his twenties. The many posts he held included director National Museum of Wales, Keeper out the London Museum, director of the Institute of Archeology of London University, director-general of archeology in India, and adviser in archeological matters to Pakistan. The panel's report will remain secret until filed with the House Clerk and probably will come before the full House for approval or rejection next week. Reprimand was the mildest form of punishment the panel could recommend. Approval by the House simply would mean the reprimand would be entered to House records. Sikes.

70, an 18-term congressman, would not lose seniority. His chairmanship of the Military Construction Subcummittee, central to the charges, would not be affected. THE SOURCES said Reps. F.
