TWO FILMS ABOUT women opened in Chicago over the weekend: One screamed into town laden with Academy Award nominations and chorusing critical praise; the other tip-toed in silently for what looks like the old twojweeks-and-out routine. If anything, it should be the other way around. "Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York" is a surprisingly warm and funny tale of a 25-year-old Pennsylvania Jewish princess who takes an apartment in New York to find herself a prince. Jeannie Berlin who now and forever may be doomed to being identified as Elaine May's daughter and as the girl who made a mess eating an egg salad sandwich in "The Heartbreak Kid" stars as the Levine girl looking for a Mr.

THE CAST Sheila Levine Jeannie Berlin Sam Sloneman Roy Scheider Kate Christiansen Rebecca Danna smith Bernice Janet Brandt Mr. Levine Sid Melton story owes more to traditional Hollywood romance than to the book, which was as a protracted suicide note. But within the happy-ending tradition there've been some changes made.

While Berlin revels in the same comic awkwardness she brought to "Heartbreak Kid" and her mother laid out in "A New she gives Sheila Levine spunk that's not just a sop to women's lib, but a thoroly integrated toughness. Her halting delivery, full of "uhs" and silence, nicely fits the character of a young woman trying to break free from possessive parents. You end up rooting for her not only to finish each sentence, but also to take control of her life. THE STORY is forever taking left turns past a love triangle involving Berlin's helter-skelter, model-actress roommate, past Scheider coming to grips with his precious bachelorhood, past Berlin finding and improving on a decent job, and into the rare movie territory of presenting us with a fully competent woman. More lasting than, the script's considerable humor are the extended shots of Jeannie Berlin's face.

When the camera lingers after she says sentences containing more than one emotion "I feel stupid and angry," she tells a friend after letting Scheider jilt her, we're given the chance to study the face of a woman with depth. That doesn't happen very often In today's movies. Tomorrow we'll take a look at "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," a film that is less successful trying to do the very same thing balance humor and emotional depth. his apartment, ask them if they want to talk openly, and then immediately pop the question, "Do you want to go. to bed?" When Scheider gives Berlin that routine, she has the fortitude to explain she's only made it with one other guy "and I'm not even sure we did it right" and that, well, no, she doesn't know what she wants to do.

Dino seems hopelessly o.t of place without a backup chorus line of bikinied broads; the camera often catches him smiling when he should be scowling. Robert Hoban's screenplay plays fast and loose with credibility, relying on the audience's knee-jerk reaction to police corruption to tie up the loose ends.
