PEORIA tAPJ-The United Auto Workers went on strike against Caterpillar Tractor Co. early Monday as 17,000 workers joined 23,000 others already on an unauthorized walkout. The strike, idling 40,000 workers in Illinois and five other states, began at 12:01 a.m. and came 12 hours after negotiations between the union and the company broke off in Peoria. Among the plants affected is one in Aurora.

Caterpillar Vice President Clifford Hathway said the talks reached an impasse at about noon Sunday and the negotiators decided to return to their homes. BEFORE THE WALKOUT, UAW Vice President Pat Greathouse, the union's chief negotiator in contract talks with the Big Three farm and heavy-equip ment manufacturers, said he saw no chance of talks being resumed in the' near future. About 23,000 members of UAW Local 974 walked off their Jobs at Caterpillar's sprawling works in the Peoria area Oct. 1, but their strike was considered unauthorized by the international union until Sunday's talks failed. THE MIDNIGHT strike added to the strike 17,000 Caterpillar workers at plants in Aurora, Decatur, and Pontiac, Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Memphis; Mentor, Ohio, and York, Pa.

The union's three-year contract with Caterpillar, International Harvester, and Deere and Co. expired Oct. 1. The union negotiated a new three-year contract with Deere last week after a three-week strike at Deere Operations in Illinois and Iowa. Edmund H.

Tuesday. Retired employee of the the City of Chicago Department of Water end Sewers, Water Meter at 8 p.m. Interment Holy HOLMGREN rity Program operated by the Social Security Administration. I have been receiving Social Security benefits beginning at age 62 in 1957, when I received $65.00 a month. With the raises since I now receive $200.00.

Could I receive some additional benefits? A The intent of the Supplemental Security Program is to assure a minimum income level for people who are 65 or over, blind, or disabled. Payments range from $1 to $208.20 a month for an individual and $1 to $312.20 a month for a couple. People who already have this income level, or resources, are not eligible for payments. Social Security benefits count as unearned income, and the limit is $228.20 per month. Not counting earned income or resources, which you did not mention, you would be eligible for a small Supplemental Security check.

You should contact the nearest Social Security office and find out definitely if you are eligible for these benefits. What Is your Social Security problem? Questions will be answered In this column by your local. Social Security office. Address them to Social Security, Chicago Tribune, 435 N. Michigan Chicago, III.
