Powell i Holmberg, advertising executive By Kenan Heise LAWRENCE OSCAR Holmberg. 75, a Chicago advertising executive for more than 40 years, was founder, and retired president of Lawrence O. Holmberg Advertising Agency.

He also was past president of he Union League Foundation for Boys Clubs and past secretary of the Better Government Association. Services for Mr. Holmberg, a resident of Wilmette and formerly of Winnetka, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Christ Episcopal Church, Maple and Oak Streets, Winnetka. He died Sunday at his home.

Mr. Holmberg was born in Sac City, and attended Drake University. He went to work in 1929 for Camp-bell-Ewald advertising agency in Detroit. From 1930 to 1932, he was advertising manager for Vacuum Oil which later became Socony-Vac-uum Oil Co. and is now Mobil Oil Co.

He left the company but continued to keep it as an advertising account until the mid-1950s. FROM 1936 to 1913, Mr. Holmberg was the Chicago manager of the J. Stirling Getchell Inc. agency, which became Compton Advertising Agency Inc.

in 1943. He remained with the firm after the change of name and was its vice president from 1948 to 1959. In 1959, he opened his own agency. "He was a highly respected leader in the advertising fraternity," said a fellow advertising executive, Her WASHINGTON AP-Senior U.S. District Judge George L.

Hart who ruled against the late Rep. Adam Clayton Powell in his fight against being barred from Congress, died Monday in George Washington University Hospital, lie was 78. The judge's family said the cause of death was a heart ailment. Judge Hart was appointed to the federal bench by President Dwight Eisenhower on Aug. 26, 1958.

He served as chief U.S. district judge here from March 19, 1974, to July 14, 1975, and achieved senior status on May 16, 1979. Judge Hart gained national attention in the case involving Powell, a Harlem Democrat who sought court support in his unsuccessful attempt to overrule a House decision in January, 1967, refusing to let him take his seat because of financial irregularities and travel abuses. Powell was re-elected to the House two years later and seated after he agreed to surrender all seniority and pay a $25,000 fine. Powell, who spnt much of that term at an island retreat in the Bahamas, was defeated in the 1970 Democratic primary.

Judge George Hart in 1967 constitutional doctrine of separation, of powers, which he traced to the Babylonians 2,000 years before Christ, and the 18th Century English concept of a strong, independent judiciary. Born in Roanoke, Judge Hart was graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1927 and obtained a law degree three years later from Harvard University. After 11 years in private law practice, he was an officer during World War II and took part in campaigns in Africa, Sicily, Italy and southern France. SAN FRANCISCO IUPIJ Hugh Bryson, an outspoken waterfront labor leader who went to prison for perjury during the McCarthy era, has died at the age of 69. Mr. Bryson, who died Sunday, was president of the National Marine Cooks and Stewards Union when he was convicted of perjury in 1955 under the Taft-Hartley Act for falsely swearing he had never been affiliated with the Communist Party. He was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $10,000. He spent two years in prison before being paroled and later spent a dozen more years in an unsuccessful fight to overturn his conviction.

AT 16 HE hopped a freight train In Illinois, where he was born, and came to California. He joined the Merchant Marine and later worked as a cook and waiter, gradually making his way up through the union ranks. After the labor organization dissolved, Mr. Bryson went into real estate and rapidly became a success as a motel real estate broker. In 1982, his firm, National Motel Brokers, handled 22 sales worth $25 million.

In 1983, the firm brokered the sale of two huge hotels. Divorced many years ago, Mr, Bryson is survived by three sons, three daughters and seven Name Address Apt. PALM SPRINGS. Calif. UPI Andrea Leeds, a leading lady in films of the late 1930s who became known to a new generation of fans through late-night television reruns of such movies as "Stage Door," died Monday of cancer. She was 69. She was Best known for her starring role with Al Jolson in "Swanee River" and was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress in "Stage Door." Miss Leeds, born Antoinette M.

Lees in Butte, was discovered while a student at UCLA by director Howard Hawkes and made her film debut in the movie "Come and Get It" in 1936. THE GOLDWYN studios later dubbed her the "Kiss Champion of Hollywood," making her prove her worth in three-hour kissing tests with hopeful leading men. In 1939, she married millionaire sportsman Robert Howard, son of Charles Howard, who owned the fabled race horse Seabiscuit, and retired from filmmaking. She owned a string of race horses and was at the Santa Anita meeting when she was taken ill last month. Her late husband bought the Howard Manor Hotel, a Palm Springs landmark, in the late 1940s, and she operated a jewelry salon there that she still owned at the time of her death.
