Obituaries May McAvoy, 84, star in '20s silent movies LOS ANGELES -Silentscreen actress May McAvoy, Al Jolson's leading lady in the landmark movie "The Jazz Singer" and a star in some of Hollywood's first monumental films, is dead at age 84. Miss McAvoy was also a Rose Parade queen in 1923, the only actress ever to hold that title. At the height of her popularity, Carl Sandburg wrote a poem about her, calling her a "star-eyed goddess. The actress, a lifelong friend of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks died last Thursday after recuperating for several months from the effects of a heart attack she suffered late last year.

Her first starring, role was playing an "Hate" in 1917. With the success of "Sentimental Tommy" in 1921, the wide eyed actress moved to Hollywood and signed a contract with Paramount. Though Miss McAvoy's most famous role was in the 1927 Warner Bros, film "'The Jazz 1 the first picture to combine speech, and music in a single soundtrack, she failed to make the transition as a star of talkies. She retired in 1929 after marrying Maurice Cleary, a film and aircraft executive who helped found the United Artists studios. Artero, 79, a Guamanian who became a hero in World War II by risking his life to save an American sailor, died Tuesday of a liver disorder while embroiled in a controversy with the U.S. government.

Mr. Artero received the Medal of Freedom for protecting George Tweed during, the Japanese occupation of now a U.S. territory. Tweed, of Grants Pass, told a reporter that Mr. Artero's death "really breaks me 9 Mr.

Artero had threatened to return the Medal of Freedom, the highest award made to civilians by the American government, because of a Drusilla Webster FBI Director Webster's wife WASHINGTON Webster, 57, wife of FBI Director William Webster, died Tuesday, the FBI said. Mrs. Webster, a native of St. Louis, died of natural causes after an extended illness, according to a message sent by FBI headquarters to field offices across the country Tuesday morning. The death of Mrs.

Webster comes when there has been speculation that Webster will leave office before the end of his 10-year term in 1988. Webster, 60, a Republican, was appointed to head the FBI in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. He had been a judge on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition to husband, Mrs.

His son, Tony Artero Sablan, said his father "loved the medal dearly. Artero sheltered him. In July, 1944, while the Japanese still occupied the island, Tweed was rescued after signaling to a U.S. destroyer. Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal said the information Tweed obtained helped save the lives of thousands when American forces recaptured the island. Gordon Jenkins, 73, composer, conductor MALIBU, Calif.

Jenkins, award-winning composer and conductor for such stars as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Judy, Gehrig's Garland, disease. died He Tuesday 73. of Lou was Mr. Jenkins died at his Malibu home, said his son, Gordon Jr. The younger Jenkins said his father had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a progressive neurological disorder, for at least three years.

Mr. Jenkins began his career during the big era with the Isham Jones Band. He worked with Sinatra on the best "Trilogy" album. In 1965 he won a Grammy for arranging Sinatra's hit "It Was a Very Good Year." MR. JENKINS, known for his lush, arrangements, worked romantic, on many of the singer's albums.

He most recently helped Sinatra on the television special "Sinatra- The Man and His Music." Among the songs Mr. Jenkins wrote are "Manhattan "P.S. I Love You," "You Have Taken My Heart," "Blue Prelude," "When a Woman Loves a Man," "'San Fernando Valley, "Homesick" and "Blue His mournful ballad used for years by clarinetist Benny Goodman as his signoff theme. Mr. Jenkins got his first conducting job in 1936 for Vincente Minnelli in the Broadway production of "The Show Is On." HE IS CREDITED with helping such stars as the Weavers and the McGuire Sisters.

He was musical director for the radio shows of such stars as Dinah Shore and Bob Burns. Mr. Jenkins' wife, Beverly, who sang with the Six Hits and a Miss, was the soloist on "Manhattan Tower" in 1946. He was born May 12, 1910 in Webster Groves, Mo. He is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
