AVt. si yw moment is when a young woman companion Lisa Langlois smiles. She has a beautiful smile. Too bad she has to spend much of the film being humiliated in the nude. WHAT ABOUT the 3-D? That's the capper.

Not a shot in this film looks good in 3-D or wouldn't be improved if photographed in 2 D. I took my lousy paper 3-D glasses off repeatedly, as did many others, and we didn't miss much, except the eyestrain. "The Man Who Wasn't There" has no reason for being a 3-D film. It was produced by Frank Mancuso whose father is the president of Paramount Pictures. And that explains everything.

Rating for ''The Man Who Wasn't zero stars. 'Hollywood Outtakes' FAR MORE enjoyable is a compendium of film clips featuring famous Hollywood stars of the '30s and '40s in roles other than dramatic parts. The compilation is "Hollywood Outtakes, but the outtakes flubbed scenes are the least interesting element. More compelling are the commercials with the stars, including Bette Davis in 1935 for General Electric dishwashers she even makes the boring ad copy seem urgent, and Shirley Temple at age 5 for the Red Cross her professionalism and good cheer is stunning. Among the oddities are Joan Crawford, "Mommie Dearest" herself, with a holiday family greeting, and James Dean, of all people, in a seemingly spontaneous public service pitch for highway safety.

THE MOST riveting moment is the juxtaposition of a young, buoyant Judy Garland in a film of a 1942 radio show with Bob Hope and, 12 years later, Garland as a bloated, drugged, old woman attending the premiere of "A Star Is Born. It's hard to believe it's the same person. From all this footage we take the certain notion that the old movie stars were giants then and remain so today. Anything they do on film is compelling. Anything.

"Hollywood Outtakes" is playing through Thursday only at the Parkway Theater, Clark Street and Diversey Parkway. It moves to the Varsity revival theater in Evanston Sunday through next Tuesday. Rating for "Hollywood 3 stars. MARK HAMILL HARRISON FORD CARRIE FISHER BILLY DEE WILLIAMS ANTHONY DANIELS. BBoland 1st. Run ChlcagolantJ was at a loss for words, er, titles. I answered with "I Spit on Your Grave" and "Porky's, completely forgetting "Fire Sale" with Alan Arkin or "Fools" with Jason Robards and Katharine Ross. Now I have my fifth candidate: "The Man Who Wasn't There," which also takes the booby prize for the worst 3-D film ever made. How bad is it? Once or twice a year a movie will earn the dubious honor of a "zero stars" rating.

For a film to receive "zero stars," it must be a lot worse than bad. It must be transcendentally awful. Something in the film must leap off the screen to abuse the viewer almost physically. And that moment, or accumulation of moments, usually doesn't occur until the second or third reel. But with "The Man Who Wasn't There," the first five minutes of lamebrained comedy marks it as less than a student-film-caliber project.

The story what an exaggeration! is about a young American I Steve Guttenberg working in Washington for the State Department. He finds a metallic sphere containing capsules of a liquid that makes one disappear for an hour. Foreign agents and others end up fighting to possess the sphere and the secret formula in a comic chase scene that becomes an excuse for female nudity and flying daggers. BUT BACK to those first five minutes. We meet Guttenberg on his wedding day as he suffers through a disastrous dinner at the State Department for a bunch of Third World nations.

That turns out to be an excuse for pathetic stereotypes that could only come from gags rejected by Archie Bunker. An African sits in a huge jar of spilled French's mustard notice the plug, which also appears in the end credits, and an East Indian is hit over the head with a barrel of peanuts. This tumult makes Guttenberg late for his wedding, at which he is forced to change from his tuxedo into another tuxedo. Why should he change if he's already late? Because when he changes we see he's wearing boxer shorts with big red hearts. Isn't that a hoot? The only remotely appealing The good news is Jonathan's having his first affair.

The bad news is she's his roommates mother. PLAZA Devon at McCotmitk 70MM ESQUIRE 78 Oak xjtixTx a A A rvw YiV V. 70MM FORD CITY CIN. 70MM EDENS 7301 S. Cicero Noiinbioolt GATEWAY 70MM GOLF MILL 5216 W.Lawrnc.
