2 be be be be be be be be be 13, 1984 Chicago Tuesday, Tribune, November Obituaries Catfish Bend author Ben Burman, 88 By Kenan Heise BEN LUCIEN BURMAN, 88, ereator of the Catfish Bend stories, was credited through his novels and travel books with helping America appreciate its folklore and remember its rivers, especially the Mississippi. A memorial service for Mr. Burman, who lived in New York City and Biloxi, is pending. He died Monday in St. Luke's Hospital in New York.

Mr. Burman was born in Covington, on the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati. Even as a child he wanted to be a writer. When he was young, he was a cub pilot on a steamboat, the Tennessee Bell, an experience that affected his writing for the rest of his life. In the early 1930s, he became a crime reporter for the New York World.

He quit to be a free lance writer, living in an attic apartment in Greenwich Village. THE FIRST STORY he sold was to Liberty magazine and the editors invited him to come uptown. He didn't have a nickel for carfare, but his wife, Alice, had two three cent stamps, which they were able to cash in. His first novel, "Steamboat Round the was a bestseller that was made into a movie. Will Rogers starred in it and won an Academy Award for his performance.

Two other popular novels about the river and steamboating followed: "Mississippi" and "Blow for a Landing." In 1940, Mr. Burman wrote a factual book about the Mississippi River called, "Big River to Cross. One enthusiastic reviewer, noting Ben Lucien Burman with New Guinea natives during a trip in 1966. that the author was often compared with Mark Twain, said, "If the gentle Burman had preceded Twain, then in all probability Twain would have become known as 'the 9 new Ben THE MOST ENDURING of his 22 books have been his Catfish and have been translated into such Bend books. They are world -famous languages as Urdu, Thai, Burmese and Vietnamese.

Catfish Bend is a mythical locale on the Mississippi, not far from New Orleans. In the first book, "High Water at Catfish Bend," Doc Raccoon tells the story of how he and four other animals- a silly rabbit; a gloomy bullfrog; Judge Black, a snake; and Jaycee Hunter, a sporty fox to refuge on a mound during high water. Ultimately, they overcome their lower natures and transgressions Jaycee's unfortunate behavior in a watermelon and are able to get the mayor of New Orleans to build levees at Catfish Bend. They even let the Catfish farmers take the credit because, after all, they always left the lids off their garbage cans at night. The first four books were illustrated i by his wife, who died seven years ago.

Mr. Burman also wrote novels and travel books that were filled with the folklore of the U.S. and of exotic places in the world. These included "It's a Big, and Continent," "Children of Noah" "The Street the Laughing Camel." He and his wife's ability and desire to travel became legendary. In their 80s, they traveled in the interior of New Guinea and wrote an article on the Border Patrol in the Southwest for Reader's Digest.

Mr. Burman was in Chicago two months ago on a tour promoting his most recent book, "Thunderbolt at Catfish Survivors include a brother, A. Sidney Burman, of Chicago. Police Capt. Patrick Needham, 51 By Philip Wattley CAPT.
