Mr. Blewett, a native Bowling Green, came to with his mother, a schoolteacher, in 1926. The Regal was built in 1927 by Balaban Katz, the theater owners, to serve South Side blacks as a movie palace and for stage performances. Movie theaters in Chicago generally were segregated until the late 1950s and early 1960s. A medical student, Mr.

Blewett started working at the new theater at nights as assistant chief of service and a messenger. He quit school to help support his mother, intending later to resume his education and become a doctor. The theater bug bit him, and he stayed, EMDE Ethel C. 456- 7776. He returned to music and in the early 1960s became music director and arranger for Onederful Records and later a recording artist, producer and arranger at Chess Records, both in Chicago. In 1968, he went to Los Angeles to record and to produce for ABC-Dunhill. He produced the album "MacArthur Park," featuring his tenor sax. He arranged "Elegant Soul" and "Soul Symphony" for the Blue Note label.
