From 1985 until early 1987 he had been based in Hong Kong as the bank's senior credit officer for the Asia-Pacific region. From 1972 to 1974 he was general manager of a bank branch in Singapore. Mr. Robertson, who grew up in Washington, D.C., came from a banking family. His father, James L.

Robertson, was for 21 years a governor of the Federal Reserve Board before retiring as vice chairman in 1973. Mr. Robertson was a graduate of Yale and earned a master's degree in business administration from Harvard. Between Yale and Harvard he spent three years in the marines.
