He was 43. In his plays and novels, Whitmore created gay literature set against the broader background of traditional American taboos and denial. In his nonfiction, Mr.

Whitmore wrote about people around him who were affected by acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Finally, he wrote about himself. Whitmore wrote three plays: "The Caseworker," produced by Playwrights Horizons in 1976; "Flight-The Legacy," produced at the 18th Street Theater in 1979; and "The Rights," produced by the Glines in 1980. In 1980, Whitmore's first novel, "The Confessions of Danny Slocum," was published by St. Martin's Press.

"Nebraska," his second novel, was published in 1987 by Grove Press. "Reaching Out to Someone With AIDS," an article he wrote for the New York Times Maga- zine, led to Whitmore's nonfiction work "Someone Was Here: Profiles in the AIDS published by New American Library in 1988. Whitmore later wrote a cover story for the New York Times magazine about his own experience as an AIDS patient. Whitmore was a former member of the Gay Academic Union and the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Michael Canter, Whitmore's longtime companion, was with him when he died.

He is survived by his mother, Irene, and his sister, Mary Jo Hamel. James Betchkal, school board group executive Mass for James Betchkal, 54, a senior executive with the National School Boards Association, will be said Monday in Washington, D.C. Mr. Betchkal, a former Chicago resident, died Friday of cancer in Washington. He was a journalist and leader in the education publishing field.

During his 20-year career with the school boards association, he was responsible for consulting and training activities. Under his leadership as editor and publisher, association publications won national awards. Born in Racine, Mr. Betchkal attended the University of Miami and later did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University. From 1965 to 1968 he was executive editor of Pioneer Press. He joined the school boards assocation's staff in 1968. He is survived by his wife, Ann; a daughter, Dr. Janet Betchkal; a son, Mark; his mother, Frances of Racine, three brothers; and a sister. He subsequently adapted "Your Cat" for the stage; it had a run on Broadway in 1975 and was revived Off Broadway in 1978. He also wrote the novel "There Must Be a Pony!" which was adapted for television in 1986 with Elizabeth Taylor starring, and a work of nonfiction, "American Grotesque," about a conspiracy in the aftermath of President John Kennedy's assassination.

Just before his death, he had finished a nonfiction book about his experiences, entitled "Diary of a Mad Playwright." He also performed as part of a comedy-satire team known as Jim Kirkwood and Lee Goodman, in nightclubs around the country. The team had a radio show on WOR in New York for several years. Ross Claiborne, Mr. Kirkwood's publisher at Delacorte Press, said Saturday: "He was clearly one of those people with an infectious charm and wit who beguiled everyone, socially and professionally. He was one of those people who was genuinely funny.

His actor's background gave his anecdotes a theatrical Mr. Kirkwood was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity Association, as well as the Dramatists Guild, the American Guild of Variety Artists and PEN. He is survived by a half-brother and a half-sister. James Kirkwood stint in the United States Coast Guard. He performed in "Panama, Hattie" and "Wonderful and played opposite Tallulah Bankhead in "Welcome Darlings." He had roles in the films "Mommie Dearest," "Oh, God, Book Il" and "The Supernaturals." Mr. Kirkwood's novels include "'Hit Me With a Rainbow," Ex-CIA official Robert Amory Jr. WASHINGTON (AP)-Robert Amory a former deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and retired secretary and general counsel of the National Gallery of Art, has died of cancer. He was 74. Mr.
