"I can take someone ust starting out and, with just a alt-hour ot instruction on a range, have that person shooting inside an o-inch circle consistently from 20 yards," says Myron Rutledge, an Oswego resident who is a member of the Au-roraland Archers. Rutledge values the sport as an escape from everyday pressures. "You concentrate so hard on the -range that you forget about all your problems before long," he says. Women can have just as much fun as men. Kathy McCrimmon of North Aurora is a past state champion both indoors and outdoors.

She got her start at age 10. "Archery is a sport the whole family, including children, can enjoy, she says. An archery set with fiber glass bow and arrows (most arrows today employ synthetic feathers instead of the real thing) and sight can cost as little as $125. The best equipment, including gloves, arm guards and a quiver, can go for $500 and more. Bows are set at a variety of tensions, with a range of 45 to 60 pounds.

There are about a half-dozen specialty archery shops in the Chicago area, where experts can help fit beginners with the right-sized equipment. The Bowhunter Nationals are open to the public. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7 a.m.

to 2 p.m. Sunday at the John Lipoid Recreation Center on 111. Hwy. 25, North Aurora. Call the Auroraland club, listed below with other members of the Northeast Archery League, for details.
