FENCIL her inaugural lecture on taking the Cambridge post, contained views of causation that were both original and controversial. Always a leader in the field of moral philosophy, Ms. Anscombe argued that modern philosophy had misunderstood ethics.

In her 1958 paper, "Modern Moral phy," she argued that ideas like "moral obligation" and "moral du-; ty" are meaningless hangovers from the Judeo-Christian idea of God as lawgiver. She argued that society should abandon this concept of morality and return to the secular Aristote-lian concepts of practical reasoning and virtue. And she believed that it was no longer possible to study moral phi-losophy without understanding concepts such as action, intention and pleasure in their non-moral -sense. In 1956, she opposed Oxford's pro-" posal to give President Harry Tru-. man an honorary degree because he had given the go-ahead for atomic bombs to be dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Naga--saki.

A Roman Catholic, she shocked, liberal colleagues by strongly op-1 posing contraception and condemning homosexuality. In 1941, Ms. Anscombe married fellow philosopher Peter Geach, who survives her, with their four! daughters and three sons. Funeral details were not available. Schmitz established himself as one, of the country's most right-wing and outspoken congressmen, even enraging his most famous constit-t uent, President Richard Nixon, a part-time San Clemente resident. Of Nixon's historic visit to Chi -J na, Mr. Schmitz, who considered-the visit a sellout, quipped, "I have no objection to President Nixon go- ing to China. I just object to his. coming back." The commentcost Mr.

Schmitz1 support and he lost the June 197 primary. That fall, he replaced Ala bama Gov. George Wallace, who was paralyzed when shot by would-be assassin, as the American Independent Party candidate. He collected more than a million votes. In 1978, Mr.

Schmitz won a state Senate seat again, but his caustic remarks about minorities had grown so extreme that he lost the support of even the John Birch So- -ciety The scandal that ultimately brought his downfall, though, was the 1982 revelation that the politician who espoused family values and fiercely opposed sex education in schools had a pregnant mistress and a 15-month-old son born out of wedlock. Associated Press COSTA MESA, G. Schmitz, the ultraconservative politician whose fiery rhetoric defined right-wing Southern California Republicanism for nearly two decades, has died at 70. Mr. Schmitz's legislative career ended in scandal, and years later his daughter, schoolteacher Mary Kay LeTourneau, gained her own notoriety and went to prison for having sex with an underage pupil, conceiving two children with him. A one-term congressman who also served in the state Senate, Mr.

Schmitz died Wednesday in Washington, according to a statement from the Orange County Republican Party. He had been suffering from cancer. Mr. Schmitz, whose political hero was Sen. Joseph McCarthy, was first elected to office in 1964 as a state senator.

A national director of the ultraconservative John Birch Society, he attracted the support of wealthy conservatives and was chosen to run for Congress when the county's longtime conservative Rep. James B. Utt died. After his election in 1970, Mr. POTTER Robert E.
