His skills in mathe- Kenneth B. Henderson, 92, a retired professor of mathematics education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and co-author of 13 math textbooks, died Wednesday, Oct.

3, in his home in Mesa, Ariz. Born in Cleveland, Mr. Henderson earned a bachelor's degree in 1931 from Baldwin Wallace College in 1 Berea, Ohio, and a master's degree from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1936. Mr. Henderson served during World War II as an Army Air Forces captain at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, using his geometry skills to help teach bomber pilots to fly.

After the war, Mr. Henderson earned his PhD from Ohio State, then taught at there and at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Illinois in 1948. He retired as a professor emeritus of secondary education in 1974. Mr. Henderson decided to leave his university post after becoming impatient with dis- Kenneth B.

Henderson ruptive student protests against the Vietnam War, said his stepgrandson, Dr. David E. Morrison III. "There wasn't any 1 teaching going on, and he loved teaching," his stepgrandson said. "It was a thread throughout his life.

He was passionate about people and teaching and wanting to get it right." After retiring, Mr. Henderson and his first wife, Ruth, moved to Florida and then to Mesa, where they enjoyed square matics and "passion for understanding" also helped him do very well with investments, his stepgrandson said. "He was up early every day, reading The Wall Street Journal, and he could talk in-depth about all different kinds of markets," his stepgrandson said. "But he was very modest and generous, and pretty shy and Mr. Henderson's first wife, whom 1 he married in 1933, died in 1994.

The couple had no children, and in the last few years of his life Mr. Henderson enjoyed being part of a larger family through his second marriage. "He said he always wanted to have a family," his stepgrandson said. Other survivors include his second wife, Marian Taylor Morrison; three stepsons, Dr. David E.

Morrison John Morrison and Dr. S. Kelly Morrison; a stepdaughter, Mary Morrison Hamlin; eight other stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Arizona. JAMES F.

PHILLIPS, 70 Early environmental activist known as The Fox James F. Phillips, 70, whose anti-pollution activities under the alter-ego "The Fox" gave rise to the more controversial environmental activism movement of the 1980s, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Countryside Care Center in Aurora, where he had lived since June because of complications from diabetes. A former teacher and environmental advocate in Kane County, Mr. Phillips was a longtime resident of Oswego and lived in the Fox Valley area for most of his life.

His childhood was spent in part on his family's farm in Montgomery, which is where the environment became his lifelong passion. Mr. Phillips earned a degree in biology from Northern Illinois University. Later, he taught middle school science in Oak Lawn and Hillside for 10 years. Vic was born May 28, 1916 in lowa City, Iowa, to Benjamin and Sarah Della Smallwood and moved to Chicago at age 12. He settled in Downers Grove with his wife and family in 1950. Vic worked as a stationary operating engineer with Local 399B for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He is survived by his children, Michele (Ken) Batterson of Oswego, Marla Killian of Newark, Robert Jeffery (Jan) of Lisle and Lori Ann (John) Walker of Downers Grove; his daughters-in-law, Patricia and Theresa; 18 grandchildren; 15 -grandchildren; his SISter, Dorothy Ann Wendt of Kenosha, WI; and sisters-in-law, Anne Smallwood and Mary Ellen Smallwood. Beginning in the late 1970s, Mr. Phillips was a field inspector for the Kane County Environmental Department, retiring in January 1986 to start the Fox River Conservation Foundation. Mr. Phillips was also a history buff, with a special interest in colonial New England. In 1973, he participated in a re-enactment of the expedition of Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet down the Mississippi River.

He also helped write a book titled "The History of Montgomery" as well as "Raising Kane," about his adventures as The Fox, under the assumed name "Ray Fox." Survivors include two brothers, Herb and Albert; and two sisters, Dorothy Spring and Margaret Webb. A memorial service has been held.
