Wednesday, May 5, 1993 Obituaries Almanac James E. DeLacerda, 46, nurse for AIDS patients By Kenan Heise James E. DeLacerda, 46, a nurse practitioner, worked with AIDS patients at Cook County Hospital from 1984 to 1990 and was the first coordinator of the AIDS unit when it opened there in 1989. A resident since March of Rock Island, he died of complications from AIDS Saturday in St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.

"He was a real fighter, especially for other people's rights," said Dr. Mark Sherman, who worked with him at Cook County. "He wanted society to see AIDS and the people with it in a more logical and rational way. And he really pushed the bureaucracy. He did not go along with the flow, but sought to change it." Born in Muscatine, Iowa, Mr.

DeLacerda graduated from the University of Illinois, receiving bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing there. He was a Navy veteran from the Vietnam era and a trauma specialist, certified in medical and surgical nursing. Mr. DeLacerda started working with AIDS patients at Cook County Hospital in 1984 and pushed for the hospital to start its own in-patient unit. In 1990, he became nurse manager of the AIDS unit of Davies Medical Center in San Francisco.

A Catholic, he was active with the AIDS Pastoral Care Network and helped plan liturgies for it. His longtime companion, Eugene Orton, died last November. Survivors include: his mother and stepfather, Bette and Frank Anson; his father and stepmother, Robert and Betty; three sisters; and two brothers. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday in St.

Joseph Catholic Church in Rock Island. Plans for a memorial service here are pending. i i Sister Luciana Trentin; headed St Charles nuns By Kenan Heise Sister Mary Luciana Trentin, 54, provincial superior of the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles, has headed the U.S.. province of the religious congregation for three terms.

A resident of the sisters' motherhouse in Melrose Park, she died there Sunday. "She was really like a mother to us," Sister Manuela Amaral, a member of her community, said. "Mother Provincial was a very dedicated and lovely person who did everything she could for others. She really went out of her way for other people. For me, she was a saint and she is in heaven right now," The Sisters of St.
